José Luis Guerin made his debut in 1983 with Los motivos de Berta, screened in the Forum section at Berlin. He later went on to focus on non-fiction with Innisfree, which participated in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, Tren de sombras, premiered at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes, and En construcción, Special Jury and FIPRESCI prizes in San Sebastián, and Goya for Best Documentary. He returned to fiction with En la ciudad de Sylvia, premiered in competition at Venice, showing the non-fiction Guest in its Orizzonti section. In 2011 he co-directed Correspondencia Jonas Mekas – J.L. Guerin, followed by La academia de las musas.
